Beate Rau has specialized in surgical oncology, especially in upper and lower GI-tract- and thoracic-cancer-surgery. Her main interest is surgical oncology, what she mostly did the last 35 years. She is very much involved in education of the students and young trainees. She innovated and organiozed
She was board member of the educational training committee (ETC) of ESSO and developed a training program in cancer surgery. She was elected as a board member 2018 where she shared responsibility for funding belongings and got a member of the funding committee of ESSO. Since January of 2022 she was elected as a member of the board of directors of European Cancer Organisation (E.C.O.). Additionally, she is member of several societies. She got the ESSO Medal for her engagement in Peritoneal Surface Malignancy (PSM) treatment just recently October 2025.
Since 2015 she is the head of the Section Special Surgical Oncology at the Charité. Her major interest is hyperthermia which has been central to her surgical and translational research. Convinced by hyperthermia she achieved experience in cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM) and HIPEC over the last 30 years. With her effort, she build up a centre of reference for surgical treatment of PSM in Germany at two universities Charité Universitaetsmedizin Berlin and Medizinische Hochschule (MHH) in Hanover and is therefore responsible for two centres in Germany. Prof. Rau has advanced the field through her work on Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) and HIPEC, clinical trials like GASTRIPEC, and tireless mentorship.
She is committed to the German Surgical Society of Oncology (ACO) and was called to be a member of the Peritoneal Surface Malignancy (PSM) Group, which is called the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI). For the topic, she organises annually repeating international and multidisciplinary courses to educate skills and knowledge to participants in the field of PSM.
