Dr. Leyo Ruo is an Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University’s Faculty of Health Sciences. She earned her MD from the University of Alberta, followed by postgraduate training in General Surgery at the University of Saskatchewan, Surgical Oncology. She received Clinical Research fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and an ERCP Fellowship at McMaster.

With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Ruo specializes in surgical oncology and hepato-pancreato biliary surgery. Dr. Ruo is actively engaged in clinical practice, teaching, advocacy, and research. She collaborates with both academic institutions and the private sector to advance research initiatives. Her research program combines personal projects in HPB clinical practice with participation in large, multicenter randomized clinical trials at national and international levels. Her work focuses on translational research aimed at improving surgical outcomes and developing innovative treatment strategies for complex HPB cancers.

Dr. Ruo is widely recognized for her leadership in collaborative research and frequently serves as a Local Principal Investigator on studies across Canada, Europe, and the United States. She has authored more than 100 peer reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters and has presented her work globally.
